Wayyyyy back in January of 2014, Lil Uzi releases his first EP and official project Purple Thoughtz EP, Vol. 1. It doesn’t take an Anthony Fantano to see who and what some of Uzi’s influences were at the time. The title alone, conjures images of homemade album covers, littered with satanic symbolism and 90’s era graphics. Most notably though, would have to be track 2, titled White Sh*t, produced by SPACEGHOSTPURRP. While I wouldn’t bump this EP all the time, I recommend you give it a listen if you like any of Lil Uzi’s music. It is impressive to see the various styles Uzi played with before settling into his “Rockstar” persona.
3 years after the release of Purple Thoughtz EP, Vol. 1, Lil Uzi is charting on the Bill Board 100’s and any of his music before 2016 is lost to the internet. In this same year (2017), a music video for White Sh*t surfaces on a small YouTube channel by the name of Iron Nike. It features a much younger Lil Uzi with a very different flow. When I first saw the video I thought Uzi was pulling a hard pivot into this gruff, shadowy style. Uzi has no remorse as he speaks heavily on death and murder, with a healthy dose of savage sex and drug use. While these topics aren’t exactly fresh, the delivery and personality Uzi embodies in this video shine a light on what Uzi may have been in an alternate reality.
If you’re familiar with some of my other articles, you may have heard me mention SPACEGHOSTPURRP’s influence on various artists. Whether you ride with A$AP Mob, RVIDXR KLVN, or just fuck with good music, there is no denying that these groups were on the forefront of revitalizing that dark down-south underground rap style Three 6 Mafia made famous. Whether it’s the monotone cadence, demonic undertones, or blacked out fashion sense, you can find countless traces of this underground trap style. YouTube’s algorithm for 2019 has been pushing this video heavily, as it’s garnering at least 10,000 views a day. Join the “in” crowd and check out White Sh*t and the rest of Purple Thoughtz EP, Vol.
